The Museum comes in existence in 1966 for the preservation and propagation of tribal culture. It was renovated as tribal museum and named after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of the India in 1983 in view of his rich contribution and deep insights in tribal culture and development as is embodied in Nehru's Panchsheel for Tribal Development which also encourages to preserve tribal art and culture. The tribal people of Rajasthan represent mosaic of diverse culture, a pageantry of heritages as well as embodiment of traditions. Against the backdrop of the same the museum is involved in exhibiting rich and vibrant tribal culture. The exhibits on display is well equipped with the following depicting the panorama of tribal culture.

It is a rich repository of photograph and translides on various facets of tribal life and its development.
To make the display lively and elegant look dioramas on the Bhil, Garasia and Kathodi huts with a glimpse of their lifestyle in the huts as well as the Bhil Bhopa in devra have been exhibited. The Bhil, Garasia and Saharia galleries are the main attraction of the museum.
Tribal Museum At Shilpgram, Udaipur
In the Shilpgram campus of the West Zone Cultural Centre, a tribal museum was set up in 1995. To keep pace with the ambience of Shilpgram, the museum itself built looks like an original Saharia Bangla. Here apart from depicting history of the tribes of Rajasthan, spectrum of life and culture as well as huts and devras of the Bhil, Mina, Garasia, Kathodi and Saharia have been exhibited with the help of photographs and ethnographic objects. On eve of Shilpgram Utsav during December, tribal artists are specially invited to show the excellence in art and culture.
A large number of Indian and foreign visitors and tourists regularly pay visit the museums of Institute.
